Brunswick High School - February 29th

Dana is excited to be returning for a workshop with Mrs. Dumont's biology students at Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Maine.  We are going to investigate a number of topics from the world of personal genetics:  DNA and crime, genetic testing of athletes, and some recent examples of families and individuals that have been able to use genetic information to seek medicines and interventions for health issues. Looking forward to it as always!

Maine School of Science and Math - STEM Collaborative Educator’s Camp

pgEd is happy to announce we will be teaching a week-long course at the Maine School of Science and Math this summer.  We will be there in July for the STEM Collaborative Educator's Camp,  working with teachers from all over Maine.  Teachers, if you are interested in learning more about the camp, please visit their website at:

http://www.mssm.org/outreach/STEM_Collaborate_Educators_Camp/

The course we are teaching is " Personal Genetics in the High School Classroom: Ethical, Legal, Social and Scientific Issues", and the description is below:

This course explores personal genetics and its impact on society.  Through workshop-style sessions, we will look at examples of the hopes, realities and controversies in personal genetics.  We will start with an overview: Why is genetics getting more personal? What has been happening, scientifically and technologically, since the completion of the Human Genome Project?  Starting with scientific questions and concepts, we will make connections to real world opportunities and conundrums our students and their families will face in the coming years.  In this course, we will also explore resources available through the Personal Genetics Education Project for creating lessons plans about personal genetics.
